Make a plan.

Who said that when we fail to plan, we plan to fail? Many of us have worked very hard to get to where we are health-wise right now, and the holidays and our planning or lack thereof will make all the difference in whether we keep our gains or go backward and have to start again.

Either way, I will help you, but I worked hard for my health gains this year and want to keep them until January and not start again!

It can be more than tempting when that table laden with goodies is right within our reach, but you can be ready!

When I first started my health journey, it was at this time of the year almost 30 years ago. Like many of my patients, I had severe health problems. I was addicted to sugar, and sadly I was the last to figure it out. Thankfully, I had the help and support of my health team and my husband to make it through that first holiday season sugar-free! I did it because the long-term health I sought was more important than the sugar I was abandoning. I wanted to be well, and I know you do too!

So that brings us to the plan. What to do when all around us have different ideas about how to eat and what to eat?

Know yourself and determine where you are regarding the condition of your health right now.

Like me back then, you may just be getting started on a health journey. You may have blood sugar problems, gut issues, and health concerns that the wrong foods can worsen. At best, for you, the healing that you have been building for the last several weeks or months can be jeopardized; at worst, you could put yourself back into the conditions you just pulled yourself out of recently.

So, take a good honest look. If you are in an acute phase of healing, it is best for you to take a more sugar-free, low-carb approach to the holiday season. This means avoiding the high sugar and the high carb meals and desserts bound to be at the table. You could volunteer to make a keto dessert with a sugar substitute like monk fruit or stevia (recipes attached) and bring some lower- to the table for you and others who would thank you.

You do not have to make yourself stand out. You can share with your loved ones that you are on a health journey and appreciate their help and support. Most of our good friends and family will be so happy for us as we travel the road to wellness. You have choices; please remember this.

You have more willpower and control than you think.

For those of you who have past the acute phase of health and have things more under control, I recommend healthier options for sure and moderation.

Those of you who can tolerate some meals that contain more foods than your normal diet, be moderate. In this situation, I take a look at where I am health-wise and plan ahead.

This year, I am in charge of the desserts, so I will make all my desserts with monk fruit, and make them gluten-free. I do not do well with wheat or gluten and dairy has never been my friend. I have also worked super hard to lose a few pounds recently and now a days a week off of eating properly for me can undo 3 months of hard work!

Here is my plan for this year: I will enjoy the turkey the vegetables, the potatoes. I may have a small serving of the gluten free dressing  and the sugar free sweet potatoes.  I am bringing  a large healthy salad.

A Word About Immunity & Avoiding Illness

There is no better time to boost your immunity than right now. We currently are experiencing high levels of upper respiratory illnesses across the age categories. This fall, many of my patients have been sick multiple times with different illnesses, sometimes for weeks on end. Children seem especially vulnerable.

Eating healthy is very important as we ride this new wave of viral overload. Sleeping well and getting a walk in or a workout in regularly can go a long way to preventing illness. Vitamin D vitamin C and zinc are great nutrients to keep elevated during the flu season. We have immune supplement packages available at the office for children and adults.

Please remember as you gather, to take precautions. Make sure no one is ill and if you are stay home. Masking works. Wear a mask in large groups when you are out. When you gather for holidays, ventilate your home by opening windows, using air purifiers or having large gatherings outside. Take care to protect the older and immune compromised around you.

We are still in this pandemic. We are still learning. My advice is to stay vigilant, and do all the common-sense things you have learned to do. I wear a mask in a crowd, in a store or if there are too many people in a small space I wait outside. I carry hand sanitizer and I sanitize often and wash my hands often. I eat outside at restaurants as the weather permits and we do carry out as well.

Take good care. Each of you bring something special and beautiful to this world whether it is art, or being a good mom or a great friend or a mentor to others. Your life matters in this great scheme of things. Advocate for yourself and your loved ones. You are valuable and you deserve the best self-care and the best life you can create!

Why are there no working solutions for difficult or stubborn skin conditions? Often the drugs prescribed don’t work at all, have severe side effects, or stop working after a while.

Skin problems can be itchy, burning, painful and embarrassing.  Many skin conditions don’t respond to medical treatment or keep returning, making this health problem incredibly frustrating.

My practice specializes in helping people to resolve complex, stubborn health problems that haven’t responded to conventional medical care, so I have had a lot of experience with skin conditions.

Many patients with skin problems first come to me after being on continuous antibiotics for a year or more or on steroid treatments for even longer. Both of these treatments can cause damage to health and rarely result in a cure for the skin condition.

New biologic drugs are often used for skin problems. These suppress the immune system and can have serious side effects. But skin problems can be so frustrating that they drive a person to try risky solutions.

Treating Symptoms Can Cause More Problems

It’s easy to understand and empathize with people who get their skin symptoms treated, even when the treatment may damage their health.

  • Their doctor has no other solution and may believe that the treatments he knows are the only legitimate ones.
  • Going out in public with a skin condition can be embarrassing and introverting.
  • Skin conditions can be itchy, burning, and painful to drive one to distraction.

But what if the cause of your skin condition isn’t in or on your skin? What if it’s a systemic problem somewhere in your body, and the skin rash is just a clue to the real problem?

Foundational Solutions: Your Gut

Inside your intestines or “gut” are trillions of microbes (bacteria). These microbes are integral to your health even though they aren’t part of your body.

Psoriasis Clears Up

I had been plagued with severe psoriasis, frequent headaches, and seasonal allergies for many years when I started treatment with AHA. I was helped to improve my diet and started on a program. Amazingly, my headaches stopped about a week and a half into the program. In four weeks, I had dropped eight pounds of weight due to my improved diet. FALSE: Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain

Recent studies have disproven this theory. In truth, there has never been a study that showed any evidence that it was true in the first place, so finally having the theory disproved shouldn’t be a shock.

This theory was first developed to justify antidepressant drugs. The pitch was that if your depression was caused by chemicals, then more chemicals could correct this.

What do Antidepressant Drugs Do?

According to the CDC, one in six American women over the age of 15 takes antidepressant medications.

What IS known about these drugs is that they are dangerous and addictive (see the “black box” death warning on most of them).

What is a mystery is how and why they affect different people different ways. Some people seem to get help from these drugs. Others can’t tell that they are taking them at all. Some get very negative reactions.

Overall, the longer a person takes these drugs, the more dangerous they become.

Also, the chances for possible relief of your depression and anxiety are not that great: about 20%:

Following is from “Depression: How effective are antidepressants?” NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine):

Studies involving adults with moderate or severe have shown the following:

  • Without antidepressants: About 20 to 40 out of 100 people who took a placebo noticed an improvement in their symptoms within six to eight weeks.
  • With antidepressants: About 40 to 60 out of 100 people who took an antidepressant noticed an improvement in their symptoms within six to eight weeks.

In other words, antidepressants improved symptoms in about an extra 20 out of 100 people.

What is not included in this study are the health and life disasters that often result from long-term drug use.

The truth is the patient doesn’t need a pill; they need a program

Anyone with depression and/or anxiety has many interrelated health issues that have resulted in their symptoms. There is no “silver bullet” single drug or treatment that will solve the problem.

What is needed is an integrated program including:

  • History of infections
  • History of head trauma
  • History of chemical and toxic metals exposure (such as amalgam dental fillings)
  • History of previous drug use
  • Dietary, exercise, and sunlight habits
  • Testing for allergies, blood sugar problems, and hormone imbalances

I have been using this evaluation method and finding the root causes of depression and anxiety for decades in my practice. I can report that most patients improve, don’t take medications, and progress through any mental therapy course.

As a “bonus,” these patients make overall health improvements that often result in greater energy, better sleep, better digestion, less pain, and overall well-being.

Becoming healthy is itself a valid therapy for anxiety and depression!

Thinking Distractions

Being anxious or depressed can cause your thinking to be much less efficient and effective.

Depression tends to slow down thought processes and prevent you from thinking of creative and positive solutions to problems.

  • What depression is NOT: chemical imbalances in your brain. This theory, fabricated to sell antidepressant drugs, has been completely disproven (see article here).
  • Often depression is caused by having long-term chronic health conditions with no real hope of a solution. If you are convinced that your health will prevent you from reaching your goals, depression can be a natural emotion to feel.

Anxiety can be very distracting. It’s hard to be “sharp as a tack” when you’re freaking out, and often for no good reason.

  • Your adrenal glands produce hormones that prevent stress from damaging your body. If the adrenals are fatigued, stress can cause physical reactions and even panic attacks.
  • Adrenal glands are stressed by poor sleep, allergies, eating sugar and refined carbs, not eating enough protein, alcohol, junk foods, and life stress.

I frequently help my patients to heal their adrenal glands in my clinic. It’s among the most rewarding activities, as healthier adrenals can change your life!

I have had high levels of success with depression by helping patients to improve their physical health. Hormones, blood sugar, and digestive problems are the top health issues that also could improve depression.

Is Being a Healthy Woman Hopeless?

It goes something like this: “I’m prescribing you birth control pills to control your (fill in the female problem).”

Millions of American women have heard some version of this script from their doctors. The message is clear: many female health problems have no real medical solutions. Oral hormones do not fix the underlying causes for problems such as:

  • Heavy, painful cycles
  • No cycle
  • Irregular cycle
  • PMS
  • Severe mood swings or depression with cycle
  • Bloating, back pain, acne, breast tenderness, diarrhea, constipation, weight gain, fatigue with cycle
  • Headaches or migraines related to cycle
  • Uterine fibroids

Causes of Female Problems

Despite what your doctor may tell you, your female problems are not caused by a deficiency of birth control pills.

Female problems are caused by the same stress factors that can create many other health problems in both women and men.

  • Viruses, bacteria, and fungus. These infectious agents can cause damage to cells and tissue, imbalances in pH, and interfere with hormone function.
  • Food sensitivities. One of the most common reasons for female problems, sensitivities can cause stress to hormone glands, nutritional deficiencies, and overall systemic stress.
  • Environmental toxins. Your hormone system relies on a delicate balance of many chemical compounds. These are susceptible to interference by many toxins in the environment and food.
  • Diet problems. Overeating sugar, insufficient protein, insufficient calories, inadequate nutrition (vegetables and fruits), or too much junk food can accelerate damage from viruses, bacteria, and especially fungus. A poor diet can cause systemic stress and inhibit the immune system, making it increasingly difficult for your body to heal.
  • Birth control pills. One common cause of female problems is birth control pills, especially when a woman has been on them for decades.

Do you find it ironic that the “cure” (birth control pills) can also cause health problems?

An excellent description of the effect of birth control pills is from Dr. Kate Placzek, “Birth control pills interfere with a woman’s key function —her ability to have natural hormonal production — stealing her inherent and necessary rhythms, and making her infertile, by substituting manufactured chemical mimics for her real hormones.”

Female Problems Resolving!!

I have had 25 years of hormone problems that are finally resolving! After a late menarche that was finally initiated with progesterone injections, I had very irregular cycles for my entire life.
